GENERAL INFORMATION - DEMOGRAPHICS
Georgia has a population of 3.730 000 inhabitants and is a member of the European Board of Urology (EBU). There are 22 urological departments out of which 4 are licenced to educate residents. There are 270 Urologists (1 urologist per 13,800 inhabitants) and 16 Residents (1 resident per approx. 16 urologists).
NATIONAL UROLOGICAL SOCIETY
There are two universities offering higher medical education and full residency program in Georgia Tbilisi State medical University and Javakhishvili State University. It takes 6 years in general medicine to graduate the university followed by 4 years residency in urology split by 1 year in surgery and 3 years in urology.
1 years in surgery includes: general surgery, proctology, vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, oncology, gynaecology.
3 years in Urology includes: 3.Month Diagnostic methods In Urology, Urodinamic, Morphology, Urologycal procedures supported by Rentgen and Ultrasound.
4 Month Urolithiasis: Litholisis , methafilaxia andminimal invasivetreatment, extracirporal lithotripsy, endourology.
4 Month: UTI, Andrology, Urogenital Infection.
4 Month LUTS in male patients BPH, Infravesical obstruction.
5 Month Oncourology, Neurourology, Fistulas, Urinary Incontinence.
6 Month General urology, special operative manual technics.
2 Month Renal Incufiency, Renal Transplantation.
3.Month Urogenital disorders, Kinder Urology general urology, additional employment in anaesthesiology.
The specialty of urologist is awarded after completion of residency training followed by test examination.
Upon residency completion urologists have opportunity to continue working in hospital, health centre or open the private praxis. Majority urologists consult both in-patients and out-patients.. Every year Georgian urologists participate in European and World Urologist Congresses to be aware of actualities in urology.
FELLOWSHIP - RESEARCH OPPORTUNTIES
Georgian urology residency training program isn’t certified in Europe. There are 2 university centres where urological residents are trained. Residents have opportunity to visit urological hospitals abroad.
