UROLOGICAL TRAINING

After a 6 year-long medical course, the national examination grades the students (“externes”) to choose their residency (medicine, surgery, pediatrics, anesthesy, biology) and their city. They become residents (“internes”) in surgery for five years if they foresee to validate urology.

Residency:
At least 4 semesters must be spent in urological departments, 2 in digestive, 1 in orthopedics. Other stages are left to the resident's choice but it is common to learn some vascular, pediatric, or gynecological surgery during the residency. An oral examination and the presentation of a thesis makes you a general surgeon. Two additional years as Chief assistant (“Chef de Clinique Assistant, CCA”) in an academic department, another oral examination and a publication as first author in an urological review are required for the urological diploma (“DESC of Urology”) : you are a certified urologist.

French residents and chiefs are offered additional courses :

The ECU is a 9 expert-sessions course running on 3 years : highly recommanded and prized for all residents of the country.

Complementary diplomas (DESC) : in Andrology, in Oncology. They are accessible for residents in urology and certify their qualification in these fields.

(Inter)Universitary diploma (DU or DIU) usually offer a pratical training or knowledge during 1 or 2 years on satellites subjects such as laparoscopy, urodynamics, ultrasounds, or others. Foreign visiting residents or doctors can follow these formations and be delivered a french diploma. If you plan to come, have a look to the formation on the website of french universities !

CAREER PROSPECT

Public career:
After the validation of an examination and scientific publications, the senior urologists at hospital are called PH (“Praticien Hospitalier”). This is not an academic title but PH usually have the means and the time to carry on a scientific activity. They are paid by government, with a slow increase of the salary, but with the security of employment.

To access an academic career, as MCU (Maitre de Conférence Universitaire = senior lecturer) or PU (Professeur des Universités), one year must be exclusively devoted to scientific researches. This is Master of Philosophy (“Master 2”). Then a 3-years long science thesis has to be validated to become PhD. International scientific publications are mandatory and one year must be spent in foreign country for clinical or research fellowship.

Private career:
The choice of most of the urologists is to join a group of urologists a private hospital. The ideal teams are those where you can pratice the whole field of the urology, with an accent on your specific field of interest. It is still possible to come at the hospital from time to time as consultant, bust most of your activity is private. It is always possible to go from public to private career and vice versa.
