UROLOGICAL TRAINING

To become a urologist you must pass a national exam named "Examen MIR". The exam consists in 225 questions about general medical and surgical knowledge. According with the score you may choose a post of resident in Urology. The training is for 5 years. First year is in General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Nephrology and other specialties.

CAREER PROSPECT

At present there are not unemployed urologists in Spain, this is a sign of the economic recovery in the recent years. Although, employment contracts are of low quality and and in comparison with other countries of the EU, salaries are low.

There is a huge urologic patient population on the basis of the long life expectancy of its population (the longest in the EU), but access to the urologic services throughout the country is unbalanced.

FELLOWSHIP - RESEARCH OPPORTUNTIES

The Spanish Association of Urology through the Research Foundation in Urology (FIU) offers numerous options of fellowship, research opportunities and scholarships. For more information please visit www.aeu.es. Also, Spain has 5 centers with EBU certification in basic training.
